Description
The Danbury Police Department has been providing a wide range of proactive police services since its’ formal beginnings in 1889. The Department has seen quite a bit of growth from its original 9 officers to a current staffing level consisting of 175 sworn officers, auxiliary and civilian personnel.
The Danbury Police Department consists of 4 major divisions, all of which work together to provide the citizens of the greater Danbury area with professional and compassionate police services.
The Patrol Division is the largest division within the department and is tasked with providing the community with a sensitive and proactive law enforcement presence. As with any department, the Patrol Division is considered the “backbone of the department”. This division is tasked with improving the safety and quality of life for Danbury’s residents. Administered by this division are such programs as Drug Abuse Resistance Education, Gang Resistance Education and proactive traffic enforcement. It is also responsible for overseeing and coordinating the department’s community policing efforts.
The Investigative Division is responsible for the investigations of crimes and criminal activity affecting the quality of life for residents. In addition to this, the investigative Division is responsible for the collection and preservation of physical evidence for court presentation.
The Professional Standards Division is tasked with the responsible of training, accreditation standards and ensuring that all ethical and moral standards are adhered to by all members of the department.
Last is the Administrative Division, this division is solely dedicated to supporting the vision and mission of the department. It provides the support services need by all divisions and is responsible for the proper records retention, communications and critical technology utilized by all our officers.
The Danbury Police Department is capable of providing emergency response to criminal incidents and natural disasters through our Emergency Service Unit. This unit consists of a tactical section, hostage negotiators, mobile operation center and an underwater operations section.
Successes
Consistently Danbury ranks as one of the safest cities among cities of similar size across our nation. This is an incredible accomplishment given the diversity and physical size of this great city. Danbury’s population is approaching 80,000 residents and currently has 60 nationalities represented and 45 different languages spoken within its borders. This low crime rate can be attributed in part to the Department’s commitment to proactive enforcement activities, prevention strategies and the implementation of technology.
Officers patrol more than 250 miles of roadway within its 42 square miles. In addition, Bicycle Patrol was formed in 1990, which was in fact the first of its kind established in the State of Connecticut. This unit continues to patrolling the center core of the city year-round on police mountain bikes. The Community Policing Unit devotes it efforts to addressing recent crime trends and is dedicated to quality of life crimes throughout our city.
The Department anticipates completing Tier I Accreditation with the State of Connecticut by the end of the year. This Accreditation process will push the Department to develop, maintain and update its protocols, policies and procedures.
Finally, with much excitement, the Danbury Police Department, along with other City officials, began the process of constructing a State-of-the-Art Police Headquarters in the heart of downtown. With the construction of this facility, the department will have the room necessary to accommodate the Department’s growth in the future, improve communication capabilities and coordinate its public safety activities.
