American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 Stimulus Grant

Description
After Lindberg's flight to Paris in May 1927, public interest in aviation reached a high point. Due to the a new awareness of aviation, Mr. A.E. Tweedy and Mr. Frank H. Lee felt that Danbury needed an airfield. Mr. Tweedy bought about sixty acres, which eventually became Danbury Municipal Airport.
Today the airport sits on approximately 250 acres of property and has received approximately $19,000,000.00 of capital monies since 1982 from the Federal Aviation Administration. The Aviation Commission, under the leadership of Chairman John Ashkar, along with Commissioners Baker, Opperman, Zilinek and Frizzell oversee the minimum standards for lease and or use of the Danbury Municipal Airport. The Commission also manages the current and future planning of the field, negotiates leases, issues permits and works closely with the Airport Administrator.

Successes

The City has acquired the Grenier Property on Miry Brook Road across from the Federal Express Building for Airport use. The environmental Phase 1 and 2 studies on this property have also been completed. On Monday July 14, 2008 the Tremson Corporation started to clear trees on the former Grenier property as well as other properties in the approach to runway 8 and the project should be completed by the end of the summer.
The City of Danbury has installed five of the six needed beacon poles and lights to enhance the safety of the runway 8 approach with the major portion of the monies coming from the Federal Aviation Administration.
The City of Danbury has also applied for and received Federal and State monies for the land acquisition of Wooster School and other property owners who are in the approach to runway 8.
