About us:
The Social Services Division provides access to municipal and community services. The division’s efforts improve access to housing and emergency shelter, access to medical care, and improvements to social conditions for residents.
The Women, Infants & Children (WIC) program is part of this division and serves eligible pregnant women, infants, and children by providing nutrition education, breastfeeding support, healthy foods, and referrals to health and social programs during the critical stages of fetal and early childhood development. Our accomplishments:
The Social Services Division provided essential services to homeless individuals throughout the year while our Emergency Shelter provided homeless individuals with evening shelter. Visitors come to our office daily to complete applications for our Prescription Drug Program and for help with other requests for housing and court assistance. In addition, the division’s monthly food drives collects hundreds of pounds per month of food which is then donated to local food banks.
WIC’s current caseload is approximately 2,575 participants. Once a month a satellite site also services clients in New Milford with the aid of the Visiting Nurses Association. In addition, a new satellite location at the Women Center in Danbury Hospital was recently established.
Our WIC Program has the highest breastfeeding initiation rate of 90% in the State of Connecticut. We celebrated Breastfeeding Awareness Week on August 10th by promoting the benefits of breastfeeding with a breastfeeding gift bag for all our mothers. The Danbury Immunization program teamed up with the Danbury WIC Program to promote the building of a healthy future for WIC kids through immunizations. Brochures and key information for parents was distributed all week at our WIC office. A drawing for a “Family Fun Basket” was held for all participating families at the end of the week.
The Danbury WIC Program has been active in developing community partnerships with numerous organizations including CACD, the Samaritan Center, Community Health Center of Danbury, Families Network, and the United Way.
The division celebrated National Nutrition Month in March by visiting The Community Health Center, Inc and the Primary Care Center where an interactive nutrition activity was presented to patients.
We are also members of the Head Start Advisory Committee, the Education Connection Health Awareness Committee, and The Coalition for Healthy Kids and a CityCenter Farmers Market collaborative. WIC also attended the City of Danbury’s Project Homeless Fair, and we were represented at the “Camino a la Salud” Kids Health Fair at the Hispanic Center and the Danbury Early Childhood Fair.
