NUTMEG STATE GAMES BACK IN DANBURY AUGUST 2009
DANBURY – The 21st annual Nutmeg State Games will be back in Danbury this August.
The Games attracted 5,384 youngsters (primarily ages 8-18) to its Olympics-style sporting competitions last year.
The 2009 schedule has been adjusted slightly to accommodate the requests of statewide coaches.
Individual sports competitions will be conducted exclusively on Saturday the 1st and Sunday, August 2.
Team competitions will begin Wednesday, August 5 and finish on Sunday, August 9.
"Because of the tremendous facilities, perhaps the best we have ever used, and the outstanding support we received from the City of Danbury, the Board of Education and Western Connecticut State University we are looking forward to returning to the Hat City for what we are expecting to be the best Nutmeg State Games ever," said Nutmeg State Games Executive Director William Mudano, Sr.
The event was also an economic success in 2008, delivering $579,740 in direct spending in Danbury and $1,043,532 in total economic impact, according to the Northwest Connecticut Convention and Visitors Bureau.
"First and foremost, our city’s and the state’s young athletes benefited," said Danbury Mayor Mark D. Boughton. "But the Danbury business community was also positively impacted. In this economic climate, it is distinctly beneficial to attract a statewide audience so that we can showcase our athletic facilities, our restaurants and our entire city."
The 2009 lineup of sports includes: Individual sports -- archery, bowling, diving, fencing, figure skating, gymnastics, judo, mountain biking, swimming, track & field and wrestling. Team sports -- baseball, basketball, fast pitch softball, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer and wiffle ball.
In 2008, those sports represented 446 team games and 12 individual sporting competitions.
"The 2008 Nutmeg State Games were a tremendous success for the City of Danbury. With one year's experience under our belt we are working hard to make the 2009 Games even better for the athletes, coaches, parents and visitors." said Dick Murray, HV Sports Presenting Sponsor President.
The Games are endorsed by the Governor’s Committee on Physical Fitness, governed by the National Congress of State Games and recognized by the United States Olympic Committee as the Official State Games of Connecticut.
